Can Carbon Nanotubes really take us to outer space?

It has been said that an elevator could be created using C.N.T's which will be strong enough to connect to an orbiting space station thus enabling far more cost effective space travel. Will this happen in our life time or is it just another conspiracey theory...

not a chance! Its the most stupid idea i have ever heard - what about all the birds that fly into it - or strong winds etc ... imagine the mess it would make if it broke ... madness :)

Because of the great mechanical properties of the carbon nanotubule, a variety of structures have been proposed ranging from everyday items like clothes and sports gear to combat jackets and space elevators.
