Will Gordon Brown become the next PM?

It is now definite that Tony Blair will step down as Prime Minister before September 2007. However, is it a dead cert that Gordon Brown will be the natural successor?

Speculation has continued as to whether or not Mr Brown will be elected as Labour leader and de facto PM uncontested. The BBC reported on 3 November that Peter Hain (NI Secretary) had claimed he will become leader of the Labour Party without contents. However, he did say everyone, including Gordon, would "prefer a contest to a coronation". Democracy being seen to be done and all that.

But is Gordon a natural leader? His speech at Conference was certainly received with warmth....only for him to be overshadowed and outclassed by the empassioned Blair the following day?

With the West Lothian Question still looming large over Westminster, and growing larger in these days of devolved power, is a PM who is also a Scottish MP, acceptable to the country?

What of Peter Hain, Harriet Harman and Dr John Reid whose profile raised dramatically over the recent airport terror alerts. Note it was Reid who took control in Blair's absence, not Brown (or as should theoretically be the case, Prescott).

Maybe Alan Johnson would like to return to the fore (although did he not resign from the front bench to spend more time with his family?), or what of the dependable Jack Straw.

One thing is for sure, love him or loathe him, few have the charisma of Blair, but then maybe that is exactly what the country and the Party need to move away from.

....he'll just hold the fort until someone else can be found or is marketed well enough. I reckon Gordon knows that it's temporary and is playing the game.

I quite like Gordon, although i dont think he is enough of a personality to become a leader of anything! I'm thinking someone is going to sneak up and take it away from him ...

but maybe that is exactly what this country and the Labour Party needs - a break from personality politics?
